10 Javanese Philosophy of Life

Javanese people is well-known for their noble principle. Although some people think those noble values began to fade, but still we cannot turn a blind eye on the importance of these philosophy of life. Following is ten Javanese philosophy of life with a brief explanations.
Hopefully, these can become a reflection material for all of us, especially for my self... :)



1. Urip Iku Urup
Life is lights. Our life should bring benefit to others around us. The greater the benefits we can provide, the better life we will have.

2. Memayu Hayuning Bawana, Ambrasta Dur Hangkara

Humans live in the world should pursue safety, happiness and well-being, as well as fighting insolence, greedy and avaricious.

3. Sura Dira Jaya Jayaningrat, Lebur Dening Pangastuti

Every stubbornness, insularity, and evils can only be defeated by a wisdom, gentle and patient care.

4. Ngluruk Tanpa Bala, Menang Tanpa Ngasorake, Sekti Tanpa Aji-Aji, Sugih Tanpa Bandha 

Struggling without the need to bring powerful colleagues. Winning without degrading or humiliating others. Authoritative without relying only to power, strength or wealth. Rich without material things.

5. Datan Serik Lamun Ketaman, Datan Susah Lamun Kelangan

No need to be easily offended when misfortune befalls. No need to be sad when losing something.

Aja Gumunan, Aja Getunan, Aja Kagetan, Aja Aleman

Do not easily get surprised. Never easy to regret. Do not easily get sulk. Do not grow spoon-fed mentality.

7. Aja Ketungkul Marang
Kalungguhan, Kadonyan lan Kemareman

Do not obsess by the desire to obtain a position, earthly material and carnal satisfaction.

8. Aja Kuminter Mundak Keblinger, Aja Cidra Mundak Cilaka

Do not consider yourself as the most intelligent, so you may safe from being misdirected. Do not cheating, so you can be saved from every harmful things.

9. Aja Milik Barang Kang Melok, Aja Mangro Mundak Kendo

Do not be tempted by things that look fancy, glitters, and worldly beautiful. Do not lose your focus so you can steadfastly in keeping your good intentions and strong spirit.

10. Aja Adigang, Adigung, Adiguna
Don't be ostentatious in power, in pride, in strength.
